Gender-Related Issues

  • Gender Identity Disorder
  • Gender Identity Disorder impacts children, adolescents, and adults. People with gender identity disorder may act and present themselves as members of the opposite sex and may express a desire to alter their bodies to appear as members of the opposite sex. Individual’s with Gender Identity Disorder experience a persistent discomfort with his or her sex. The disorder affects an individual's self-image, and can impact the person's mannerisms, behavior, and dress. Treatment of Gender Identity Disorder involves individual and family psychotherapy, and may also include group psychotherapy, support groups, and psychdiagnostic evaluation.

  • Men's Issues
  • Problems such as financial struggles, work and family-related stress, sexual problems, low self-confidence and self-esteem, gambling addiction, and “mid-life” issues are common among men in the United States. If ignored, not only can these problems themselves become worse, but they can also develop into more serious physical (high blood pressure, ulcers), emotional (depression, anxiety), and drug-related problems.

  • Women's Issues
  • While women and men share many of the same experiences and consequently experience many of the same struggles, such as with death, divorce, work, and relationships, there are a number of issues that are particularly relevant to women. Some of these struggles include: discrimination or unfair treatment in the workplace, body-image issues, and life transitions. Women can also have psychological issues that are attributable to biology, such as emotional struggles arising from surviving breast cancer, fertility problems, having an abortion, or going through menopause.
