Sexual Dysfunctions

  • Orgasmic Disorders
  • Orgasmic disorders are characterized by a continued delay or absence of orgasm after normal sexual arousal and excitement. An additional type of orgasmic disorder is premature ejaculation, which is characterized by persistent onset of orgasm and ejaculation with minimal sexual stimulation, generally occurring before or shortly after sexual penetration. Age, sexual experience, and intensity of stimulation must be taken into consideration when utilizing clinical judgment to make a diagnosis.
  • Seuxal Desire Disorders
  • Sexual desire disorders are characterized by a deficiency or absence of sexual fantasies, and can also include the aversion to and avoidance of genital sexual contact with a sexual partner. The age of onset generally occurs during adulthood, but can develop during puberty. The range of distress can vary; some individuals may experience episodic or continuous loss of sexual desire, while others report fear, anxiety, or disgust when a sexual opportunity is presented.

  • Sexual Arousal Disorders
  • Sexual arousal disorders are classified into two types: Female sexual arousal disorder and male erectile disorder. Female sexual arousal disorder is characterized by a constant or recurrent inability to attain, or to maintain until the completion of sexual activity, adequate lubrication-swelling as a result of sexual excitement. Male erectile disorder is characterized by persistent or continual inability to attain or maintain a sufficient erection until the completion of sexual activity. The disturbance must cause obvious distress or social relationship difficulty.

  • Sexual Pain Disorders
  • Sexual pain disorders are characterized by genital pain most commonly experienced during sexual intercourse, although less frequent, sexual pain disorders can occur before or after intercourse. The pain can range from mild discomfort to intense pain. Repeated painful experiences may lead individuals to avoid sexual experience, disrupting or limiting the development of new relationships.
