- Abuse Survivors
More than one million people are abused each year in the United States in some way. Types of abuse can include physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Oftentimes, individuals do not report or receive treatment for abuse and can develop a number of psychological problems as a result. Survivors of abuse frequently struggle with depression, addiction, posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and self-injurious behavior.
- Rape Survivors
Rape is a horribly traumatic event that no one should have to endure and can have numerous long term psychological consequences. Individuals that have survived rape oftentimes experience symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and in some cases, suicide. Further complicating the recovery process is that many rape survivors often experience significant unwarranted guilt regarding the event (i.e. “I shouldn’t have put myself in that position.”) and struggle with how others perceive them in the aftermath of the trauma.
- Trauma Survivors
Psychological trauma can be caused by a number of factors. Trauma can occur by surviving some physical threat or injury (i.e. being hit by a car or shot) or being involved in some sort of stressful situation (i.e. combat veterans, victims of natural disasters). Survivors of such experiences often struggle with a number of psychological problems following the trauma, including: depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, social withdrawal, agitation, and addiction.
